The thief of time

Procrastination

I should probably be writing a proposal right now.
Or finishing two workshops.
Or replying to emails.
But instead… I’m writing this blog.
Because something shinier popped up on my to-do list and suddenly this felt easier.
And that’s the thing about procrastination, it rarely looks like 'doing nothing'.
It looks like:
• putting the washing out because the sun is shining
• tidying something that didn’t need tidying
• replying to messages
• starting something that feels productive… just not the important thing
Procrastination is something most of us struggle with at some point.
At its core, it often comes from feeling overwhelmed, fear of not doing something perfectly or simply not knowing where to start.
And if I’m honest… today I’m feeling a bit of all of that.
We tell ourselves we work better under pressure. Sometimes we do. But often it just creates unnecessary stress, anxiety and that creeping feeling of 'I should have started this sooner.'
Tomorrow becomes next week.
Next week becomes 'I’ll sort it soon.'
To manage it, I always encourage clients to break things down into small, clear steps because big tasks feel heavy when they’re all sitting in your head at once.
So, I’m practising what I preach.
Highlighter out.
Priorities clearly marked.
Deadlines visible.
And I’ve done something simple that helps more than it should. I’ve physically moved myself away from distractions.
My office is next to the kitchen, so I’ve brought:
• a flask of coffee
• water
• and snacks
So I don’t 'accidentally' end up in the kitchen doing the washing instead of the work.
And here’s your reminder too:
Just because something feels easier or shinier… doesn’t mean it needs doing right now.
Not everything belongs on the list.
And please don’t add things to your to-do list just so you can cross them off...we’ve all done it 🙈
Be kind to yourself.
Procrastination doesn’t mean you’re lazy. It just means you’re human, overwhelmed or tired. Or all three!
Right… headphones on, feel-good music on and I’m starting the first workshop.
No more shiny distractions 💛

Mental Health Awareness Week Has Been and Gone… So What Happens Now?

I'm bringing NERVOUS back. I've been thinking, maybe it’s time we brought the word nervous back into our vocabulary. Because nervous is okay. Nervous is normal. Nervous means you care. We don’t need to medicalise every wobble or turn every flutter into a diagnosis. Sometimes, it’s enough to say: “I’m nervous… and that’s alright.” Next time those feelings bubble up, ask yourself: Am I truly anxious, or am I just nervous? And if it’s more than nerves... if anxiety, stress or low confidence are starting to take over then please know you don’t have to face it alone. I help people untangle their thoughts, calm their nervous system and rediscover what feeling amazing really means. Through 1:1 therapy, mindset coaching, and cold water therapy, we work together to help you feel calm, confident and back in control. Ready to take the next step? Book a free, friendly discovery call or message me to chat about what you need. Let’s help you feel amazing again.

You know that old saying, “New Year, New Me”? Honestly, I’ve never been a fan. I don’t think we need to wait until January to make a change — we can hit reset at any point of the year. But there’s something about September. Whether you have children or not, the back-to-school feeling is in the air. Summer winds down, autumn edges in, and suddenly there’s a shift — almost like nature is saying, “right, let’s get back to it.” When I became self-employed, I noticed how quiet summer could be. Everyone’s away, routines are out of sync, and life feels a little on pause. Then September arrives, and it’s like everything switches back on again. Networking events fill the diary, workshops pick back up, schools are back, the roads are busier — and there’s this buzz of fresh energy. And the best part? Unlike January, there’s no pressure. We’re not weighed down with resolutions, new gym memberships, or leftover chocolates we’re pretending not to eat. September feels gentler. More intentional. A natural reset button. This year, instead of piling on more to-dos, I’m focusing on a different kind of list — my Stop Doing List .

Hello! Truthfully, I’m not too sure where to start since this is my first ‘proper’ blog post, but someone I know suggested that I start writing to document my cold-water therapy workshops journey as this is something I’m creating at the moment. To be totally authentic, English and word-finding aren’t a strong point of mine, so I will be using a little bit of magic to help me out with some parts. First a little bit about me, my name is Ruth Smith, and I am ‘The Feel Amazing Therapist’ a life coach and therapist based in Marske, my passion is changing people’s lives and ensuring they feel amazing by clearing the s**t from the past and providing tools to move forward. Although I do have a counselling qualification, I am very different from a counsellor, a client will never leave my office in a state of upset, they leave knowing they are amazing with tasks to do to help achieve their goal.
